What the F*** is a Rollerskater?! is non-traditional skate media showcasing female, LGBTQ+ and under-represented roller skaters mainly based in Melbourne. The sequence of the images make connections between roller skating in the early 20th century and shows how it has evolved over the decades.
When people think of roller skates they think of little kids, the 70s or disco culture. But the sport has evolved and grown over the years. Skaters with 8-wheels have been dominating the parks performing effortless backflips and flying 15ft above ground.
Skate parks and mainstream media space is also often dominated by young cisgendered males, perpetuating a stereotype to the public eye of what skaters in general look like. This publication hopes to reclaim that space by diversifying it.
**Photos are mainly of the local Melbourne CIB community. CIB is a skate community with a 100+ chapters worldwide.
